What is a Commodity Code?
A commodity code is assigned to goods to classify imports from outside the European Union (EU). It consists of six, eight, or ten digits.
🔢 Types of Commodity Codes
- 🔹 Six-digit codes (HS Codes):
- Used internationally to monitor trade volumes and apply trade regulations.
- 🔹 Eight-digit codes:
- Required for export declarations and Intrastat reports (which track trade between EU member states).
- 🔹 Ten-digit codes:
- Used for importing goods from outside the EU.
- Required for TARIC import declarations.
📌 Why is the Commodity Code Important?
It helps determine:
✅ Customs duties & charges imposed on goods.
✅ Preferential treatments that may apply to imports.
✅ Restrictions & prohibitions on imports, exports, or transit.
