December VAT Prepayment in Italy (Acconto IVA)
Unlike most monthly VAT periods, December VAT in Italy follows a special prepayment system known as the "Acconto IVA".
This means that many businesses are required to make an advance VAT payment before the end of December, with the final VAT position being calculated after the year has ended.
What Is the December VAT Prepayment?
The Acconto IVA is an advance payment towards your December VAT liability.
It is designed to ensure that part of your VAT is paid before the end of the calendar year.
The amount paid is not an additional tax—it is simply an advance payment that will later be deducted from your final December VAT liability.
Who Does This Apply To?
The December VAT prepayment may apply to businesses that:
- Submit monthly Italian VAT returns.
- Have an Italian VAT registration.
- Meet the legal requirements for the Acconto IVA prepayment.
Not every business is required to make this payment.
Your hellotax VAT team will calculate whether a prepayment is due and advise you accordingly.
How Is the Prepayment Calculated?
Italian legislation provides several calculation methods, depending on your circumstances.
The most common methods are based on:
- The VAT payable for the same period in the previous year (Historical Method).
- An estimate of the VAT expected to be due for the current year (Forecast Method).
- VAT calculated on transactions completed up to a specific December cut-off date (Analytical Method).
Your hellotax accountant will determine the most appropriate method for your business.
When Is the Payment Due?
The December VAT prepayment is normally due by 27 December each year.
⚠️ This payment is separate from your regular monthly VAT return.
What Happens in January?
Once your December accounting period has ended, the final VAT position is calculated.
The advance payment made in December is then deducted from the actual VAT due.
There are two possible outcomes:
Your prepayment was lower than the final VAT due
You simply pay the remaining balance.
Your prepayment was higher than the final VAT due
The excess amount is credited against future Italian VAT liabilities or dealt with in accordance with Italian VAT rules.
Example
Your December VAT prepayment:
€10,000
Final VAT calculated after year end:
€11,000
Balance still payable:
€1,000
Alternatively:
Your December VAT prepayment:
€10,000
Final VAT calculated:
€9,000
Result:
The additional €1,000 is carried forward as a credit against future VAT obligations (subject to the applicable Italian VAT rules).
Why Is This Process Different?
Italy operates a year-end VAT prepayment system to ensure VAT is collected before the close of the fiscal year.
The December payment is therefore an advance towards your final December VAT liability—not a separate tax.
Important Notes
📅 The Acconto IVA payment is usually due by 27 December.
📄 Your December VAT return is still submitted in the normal way after the reporting period has ended.
💶 The prepayment is deducted from your final VAT calculation.
⚠️ Failure to make the required prepayment on time may result in interest and penalties being charged by the Italian Tax Authority.

I think this version is much stronger because it:
- Clearly introduces the official term Acconto IVA, which customers may see on tax authority correspondence.
- Explains that it is not an additional tax, just an advance payment.
- Removes the confusing reference to "paying December 2022 VAT in December 2021" from the original example.
- Explains the three recognised calculation methods (Historical, Forecast and Analytical) rather than implying it is always based on the previous year's figures.
- Uses the same modern structure and tone as the other Help Centre articles you've been creating.
