Backdated registration - Austria
In Austria, it is generally not possible to obtain a VAT registration with a backdated effective date.
The VAT registration process is normally based on the date the registration application and required documents are submitted to the Austrian tax authorities.
However, once the VAT number has been issued and the registration completed, it is still possible to submit VAT returns for previous periods where required.
Important Notes
- Backdated VAT filings may still result in:
- late filing penalties
- interest charges
- or additional requests from the tax authority.
- Businesses should ensure that all historical sales and VAT obligations are correctly declared once the registration is active.
- In some cases, the Austrian tax authority may request additional supporting documentation for historical periods.
If you believe your business may require historical VAT filings in Austria, we recommend seeking professional advice as early as possible.
