In order to save time and avoid errors, instead of using a country`s name, internationally recognized codes were introduced by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO).
The codes do follow the ISO 3166 standard, which consists of three parts:
- Part 1: Country codes (ISO 3166 - 1)
- Part 2: Country subdivision code (ISO 3166 - 2)
- Part 3: Code for formerly used names of countries (ISO 3166 - 3)
Currently the ISO 3166 - 1 standard comprises 249 countries. The list of the country codes can be found on the ISO website.
