What is a NIE/NIF?
In Spain, there are two different tax numbers used for various legal, economic, or social activities. These are the NIF and the NIE. Here’s what you need to know:
📌 NIF Number (Numero de Identificación Fiscal)
- The NIF number is the Tax Identification number for companies or company representatives.
- It includes information about the legal form of the company, entity type, and nature of the foreign entity.
- Format for companies: N + 7 numbers + control letter (Example: N1234567Y).
- Format for company representatives: M + 7 numbers + control letter (Example: M1234567Y).
- A legal entity receives a N Tax Identification Number after receiving the NIF for legal representation.
📌 NIE Number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero)
- The NIE number is used for foreigners and non-citizens, as well as non-residents with property in Spain or carrying out legal/financial transactions in Spain.
- Format for NIE: Y + 7 numbers + control letter (Example: Y1234567J).
If you're a non-Spanish individual without a foreign NIE number and planning to carry out tax-related operations in Spain, you'll need to request a tax identification number.
